LASIK FAQs

What is laser vision correction?

Laser Vision Correction is a medical out-patient surgery designed to possibly remove or reduce the patient's dependency on corrective lenses.

There are many types of Laser Vision Correction procedures available. The most popular is LASIK. Other commonly known correction procedures include PRK, LASEK, Laser Surface Treatment, and Intraocular Lenses.

What is LASIK?

LASIK is a laser eye procedure designed to correct vision issues for both distance and reading vision as well as astigmatisms. Short for "Laser Assisted in-Situ Keratomileusis", LASIK has been shown to essentially eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses in many patients. LASIK is often preferred over PRK surgery or other options because of its shorter recovery period.

LASIK surgery reshapes the patient's cornea to reduce the patient's near-sightedness, far-sightedness or astigmatism. When performed by a properly trained, experienced LASIK surgeon, LASIK enables many patients to live, work and play without corrective lenses.

LASIK surgery relies on the use of anesthetic drops placed in the eyes and is an outpatient procedure. Many patients are able to return to their routines within 48 hours of their procedure.

During LASIK, a thin flap is created. This flap enables the surgeon to reshape the cornea to correct your vision. The flap is then folded back and allowed to heal. LASIK does not require stitches or sutures

Our surgeon perfoms LASIK surgery out of our Davie Office. Consultations are available for FREE at Pannu Laser & Vision Institute. Imagine waking up and actually SEEing the alarm clock! Or being able to read the bottles in the shower! Schedule your consultation today for LASIK with Pannu Laser!

Does laser vision correction surgery have side effects?

All surgery procedures carry some inherent risks. LASIK is a surgical procedure. Although serious complications with LASIK are rare, possible side effects includedry eyes, halos, glares and decreased night vision. Many instances of side effects are related to pre-existing conditions, but anything is possible.

The desired result of any vision correction procedure is to reduce your need for glasses, but 20/20 vision is not guaranteed.

To improve your chances of receiving an optimal result from your procedure, be sure to research your eye surgeon prior to selecting your surgeon. Be sure he specializes in laser eye correction and performs many surgeries (as opposed to a surgeon that does them "occasionally" or "once in a while").

What results can I expect from laser eye surgery?

According to the Eye Surgery Education Council, 90 percent of patients who undergo LASIK surgery are able to drive a car or play sports without corrective eyewear.

LASIK laser eye surgery will not prevent degenerative eye diseases (such as presbyopia or macular degeneration).

If you have a pre-exisiting condition, it may or may not be complicated by laser vision correction procedures. Your best option is to come in for your FREE Consultation, where we can examine your eyes, discuss your condition and your laser vision correction options.

What can I expect after LASIK? How long will I be home from work?

Each person responds differently to LASIK based on their original prescription, shape of the eye, age, etc.

Your firstpost-operation check-up should be scheduledthe day after your scheduled LASIK eye surgery to review your progress and recomend additional treatment(s), if any.

Many patients have both eyes corrected on the same time. Your vision will be hazy at first. Many patients are able to return to work the next day, while some wait several days before their vision clears up. Most of our patients have their surgery on a Thursday, and are able to return to work on Monday (unless they are in a profession that requires perfect and precise vision). Some patients with elevated prescriptions, extreme dehydration, or other factors may take several months prior to full recovery.

Does LASIK surgery hurt?

How long does the actual LASIK laser eye surgery take?

The actual LASIK surgery typically takes 10-15 minutes, approximately five (5) minutes per eye. However, you will be at the surgery for around two (2) full hours on the day of your surgery. Pannu Laser & Vision Institute will use this time to explain the procedure, discuss any additional questions you may have, re-measure your eyes, and provide rest time immediately following the procedure.

May I drive home after LASIK surgery?

No, do NOT drive home after LASIK. You will not be able to see and not able to drive. You may also be drowsy.

Plan on having a friend of family member come with you or have someone drop you off and pick you up.

How long will my LASIK results last?

The results typically last a lifetime, but some patients may regress or need a second touch-up or treatment to obtain their best vision. This depends on a number of factors, including your age, higher than average prescription, have astigmatism or other factors.

Typically there is no charge for enhancements (second treatments) within the first year and if needed most people have their enhancement about three months to six months after their first surgery. If you have a higher than average prescription, or more astigmatism, or are older than the typical patient, you are more likely to need an enhancement.
